Jenna Coleman has always resisted typecasting. A flurry of high-profile roles followed: as a tough schoolgirl in Waterloo Road to , a time-travelling adventurer in Doctor Who to present , the young Queen Victoria across three seasons of Victoria to present , and a mother searching for her missing baby in the Australia-set series The Cry Now, her latest project has whisked her off to another time and place—s Bangkok, where the French serial killer Charles Sobhraj targeted tourists on the Asian hippie trail. Adopting the aliases Alain and Monique, the pair befriend western tourists, drug them, and steal their passports and money. Those who fight back are quietly disposed of by Sobhraj played with icy conviction by Tahar Rahim and his associate Ajay Chowdhury Amesh Edireweera. The result is a globetrotting nailbiter with spectacular s fashion to boot. Vogue : The Serpent is based on an unbelievable true story. When did the project first land on your desk? I was hooked. She was mysterious and complicated, and the more I read about her, the more addicted I became.

She reigned as Queen Victoria and is now back on screen as a traumatised mum from Glasgow. T he other day Jenna Coleman gave birth for the seventh time. Onscreen, however, she has been through a long phase of playing mothers. Coleman had to pretend to give birth for that as well, screaming and gripping on to the side of the hospital bed with bared teeth and a sweat-drenched face. It was very convincing, I say. It turns out that giving birth is only the start of the action in The Cry.
