As revealed by Ahsa to Deputy Commander Sloane , the Worm Gods originated from a "proto-Worm" species that lived on the gas giant planet Fundament eons ago; it is unknown whether they were native to the planet, or whether, like the proto-Hive species known as the Krill, they arrived there from elsewhere.

He was worshipped by his High Priest Nokris, Herald of Xol and the Grasp of Nokris prior to his death and defection, and is the main antagonist of the Warmind expansion. Making a pact with Oryx's estranged son, Nokris , the two fled their families and sought a new world to rule. At some point either before or after Nokris's excommunication, Xol created the Ogre Golgoroth to challenge Oryx. However, his kin, Eir , intervened to remake the beast into an even more monstrous and powerful shape to serve Oryx instead and protect the Tablets of Ruin. After Nokris' excommunication by Oryx, Nokris and Xol departed from the rest of the Hive and set out to find a new world to rule. Xol and Nokris engaged with the Warmind Rasputin and became trapped under the Hellas Basin of Mars , before being reawakened by multiple Warsat impacts in the region and the Traveler's reawakening centuries later. Upon reawakening, Xol and his worshippers, the Grasp of Nokris, sought to gain control of Mars by destroying the Warmind Rasputin. Their plans were interrupted by the intervention of the Guardian , who defeated Nokris and attempted to execute a plan by Commander Zavala to lure Xol into a trap with a Light-filled shard of the Traveler.

This is revealed in the Unveiling lore book from the Shadowkeep expansion, and it's possible that the Worm Gods are among such entities. Regardless of their origins, however, the Vow of the Disciple Raid in Destiny 2 is the first time that Guardians and humanity are introduced to Xita, though it isn't directly. Although Xita and the other Worm Gods have always been aligned with the Darkness, Xita's actual history has been rather tragic from her days on Fundament to her eternal slumber in Rhulk's Pyramid.

It is not clear whether Worm larvae are in fact immature Worms, with Worm Gods being the adult form, or if they are wholly separate from the Worm Gods' life cycle; Xita states that "larvae" is a term used by Rhulk, and describes her larvae as "segments" of herself.
