Reading the spell descriptrion I can't really put my mind around what this spell does and does not do, dnd 5e freedom of movement. The descritption is very specific in some cases, like grappling, magical effects and under water, but I'm confused cause there is a lot of things it is not specific about.
Components: V, S, M A leather strap, bound around the arm or a similar appendage. You touch a willing creature. The target can also spend 5 feet of movement to automatically escape from nonmagical restraints, such as manacles or a creature that has it grappled. I have always wanted to like Freedom of Movement. All of the words together seem like they should be doing a powerful thing.

Freedom of movement , also called Free action , was a divine abjuration and enchantment spell that allowed an individual to move normally while under water or against magic that impeded movement. The caster was required to touch the target of this spell and it lasted for over an hour, with even longer duration for more experienced casters. The recipient of free action was able to move and fight normally as if on dry land while under water using melee weapons held in the hands. Ranged weapons were subject to movement reduction immediately upon being hurled or fired. Note that this spell did not confer any ability to breathe while submerged. This spell was also proof against web , slow , hold person , paralyze , iron bands of Bilarro , and other magical hindrances to movement. In addition to verbal and somatic components, the caster was required to touch the recipient of this spell. The material component was a leather thong tied around an arm, leg, or similar appendage of the recipient. The leather thong turned to dust when the spell expired. On the Malatran Plateau , both arcane and divine magics were harnessed using spell fetishes. Freedom of movement divine spell fetish was a smooth black rock from a riverbed, polished by flowing waters.
