J-45 pickguard
By jjrpilot March 13, in Gibson Acoustic. I love this guitar but I'm not a fan of the how thick "flubber" the pickguard is. Do you all have any suggestions for a tortoise shell like, THIN pickguard that I could replace it with? That shouldn't be a difficult guard to j-45 pickguard.
Swapped out my first pickguard Gibson J At the time, I wasn't crazy about the pickguard, but it was such a great sounding guitar and had the other features I wanted early 50s style headstock and chunky neck that I figured I'd get around to changing out the pickguard one day. That day was yesterday -- worked like a charm. Cleaned up the residual glue residue with Ronsonol, polished the surface up with Virtuoso, and installed the new J pickguard made by James Burkett of firestripepickguards. Turned out wonderfully, as can be seen below. If there is one complaint, it is that the geniuses at Gibson didn't allow the nitro finish to dry appropriately before installing the original pickguard, so now I'm left with some impressions in the finish where the previous pickguard was.

Late s model: B-. General Comments: Initially, the Gibson J45 guitar differed only slightly from the discontinued J Internal contruction changes from the J included top bracing strenghtened slightly with 1" set "X" brace behind the soundhole, tall and thin back braces, and most importantly, scalloped tall and thin top braces. Also the J had a baseball bat style neck instead of the J's "V" style neck, used on pre models , and a tear drop pickguard. Sunburst was the only finish available for the J or most any war-time Gibson guitar, as a sunburst finish can hide wood flaws, an important feature during WW2 when wood supplies were short. After WW2 the J stayed sunburst, with a blond version being introduced in and called the J But in reality the J preceded the the J by one month. And then that was it, no more, until after the war, making a banner logo J JN a very rare guitar. Starting in August the J sunburst is shipped, and is shipped through the war years, unlike the J The J45 guitar is probably Gibson's most popular acoustic guitar ever made.

I hate that pickguard!! I doubt the "flubber" guard was an attempt to address any potential issues. I just don't care. Find all posts by Woodstock School Of Music. Davis Sharp Well-Known Member. Changing a pickguard is a reversible process involving no real modification of the guitar, particularly if the footprint of the new guard is identical to that of the original. Luckily my guitar wasn't damaged from the shrinking pickguard, but many have been. The Backstage. Looks classic, by the way, not sure what the issue is Kind of muddy. It is a pity, that now I can not express - there is no free time. I will return - I will necessarily express the opinion on this question.
Bravo, brilliant idea
I am sorry, this variant does not approach me. Perhaps there are still variants?
