Jim Wild's Oysters at Greenwell Point is currently open for harvest but the last three years have been "terrible" for local farmers. Login or signup to continue reading. That's according to oyster farmer Sally McLean, who said fires, floods and rain have wreaked havoc on the Shoalhaven industry. That means we have to close down the river and we can't harvest. Jim Wild's Oysters has been forced to close about six times this year. It's fantastic. In the meantime, the market price of oysters has been steadily increasing. This is due to increased demand and supply shortages. Sydney rock oysters in some areas have been completely wiped out by disease, and this has caused a surge in the market demand for oysters grown on the South Coast. QX is the seasonal disease affecting Sydney rock oysters and, while safe for human consumption, kills the majority of oysters in an infected farm. Nobody really knows where it comes from, they found it in Queensland many, many years ago. There's no QX anywhere down south.

This is a nice casual eating place. We ate oysters and scallops mornay. All of the food was excellent. Cool atmosphere, friendly staff, very fresh oysters not big as i thought unfortunately and delicious scallops. I really recommend it! Fabulous prawns for dinner tonight. We enjoyed them immensely.

If anything, the no-frills dining space on the riverbank is evidence that Wild and wife Robyn concentrate all their efforts on growing top-notch oysters. If you prefer takeaway you can buy your oysters unopened. Otherwise, order them freshly shucked by the dozen. The small, creamy Sydney rock oysters are best enjoyed natural with a touch of ground pepper and a tiny squeeze of lemon.

The family has several leases in the Shoalhaven River where they farm native Sydney rock oysters and introduced Pacific oysters. When Pacifics were first introduced into Australia, the fast-growing variety quickly took hold, threatening the local species. But growers can now purchase spat baby oysters that cannot reproduce from a grower in Tasmania, making it a safer alternative for the environment. In fact, oysters are an environmentally sound choice: the filter feeders require no external inputs and can positively impact the water quality. The stringent quality testing also means there is a real focus on the health of estuaries and river systems overall. Enjoy the oysters by the water.
