Janan possibly represents the heart and soul of humanity. But… What does this have to do with his wife? Is it a good thing? There ae many themes in the book but I think first it is a love story. Young people masturbate and watch Porno. Either I don't understand remember it completely or Pamuk didn't really say it. Their quest takes them on the road, off the beaten track, away from urbanized Istanbul. The plot pulls its head up out of the ground from time to time, introducing a few new twists and intrigues which, were they part of a tighter, more focused novel may actually have been interesting, perhaps even thrilling. Love provides some solace: "Love is the urgency to hold fast to another and to be together in the same place. Dr Fine believes that his son has been killed in an earlier bus accident. And… That is when the book seems to breakdown and take readers down a rabbit hole. Instead, we learn about it by its effect on its readers. The past is a bottomless pit — everything disappears there without a sound or trace…. As a Turk coming from the Middle East, trying to establish himself as an author, I felt intimidated. An accident! It evokes feelings you get when you are travelling by bus to distant places, excitement and toxic exhilaration of reading good books, and awe and scepticism of the mystery of life and love. They capture the diversity of life in Istanbul: The Apartment "For a long time he listened to the apartment's long-forgotten inner workings: the rattling of the radiators, the silence of the walls, the crackling of the parquet floor, the hissing faucets and waterpipes, the ticking of an unknown clock, and a strange moan wafting in from the air shaft. There were paragraphs which really resonated with me and I felt elated while reading them, paragraphs which made me think that I would definitely rate this book 5 stars and paragraphs which annoyed me because I could not see their sense. Celal too has disappeared. While Mehmet's adherence to tradition seems to be less extreme than that of Dr Fine his blood father , he still seems to represent Turkish tradition. We are cut off from our former lives, we are cast loose. After graduating from the secular American Robert College in Istanbul, he studied architecture at Istanbul Technical University for three years, but abandoned the course when he gave up his ambition to become an architect and artist. And… This reader begins to ask… What kind of a world are we being introduced to within these pages? Entranced by the book of life, he spent ever longer hours wandering around its streets, delighting in the new faces, new signs, and new stories he found before him with every turn of the page My experience of reading this one was a good example of a certain kind of reader's disease. Anyway I think I know how these places survive for so many centuries. It has started another circle of time.
