For a few years, the KTM R was my dream bike, then I finally scraped together the cash to buy a secondhand one and just sold it two months later. Far as I can see the majority are happy with their KTM s or Husqvarna with some key mods done, but I also know a substantial number of us are disappointed too. I figured it couldn't hurt to offer a dissenting opinion so that anyone looking at the big thumpers can get a broader perspective. The KTM definitely has its fans and I can see why - over 70 horsepower at the rear wheel is very addictive for the speed jockeys but I had trouble seeing past quite a few issues If found the had a close ratio gearbox compared to similar bike in its class.

Thats the price you pay for higher performance and lighter and more agile bike compared to the dull competition :whistle:. The worst thing about the internet is that everyone posts about problems but very few spend as much time posting comments about how well their bike has performed and that can make a good bike look a bit of a dog. The whole thing with a Enduro is that the majority of owners take them where they wouldn't take a lot of other bikes and consequently they take more hammer than a less focused bike. It'd be interesting to see some figures showing miles spent on road, miles spent off road and miles per major breakdown compared to other bikes that would be looked at if someone was going on a major trip into the wilderness.

The following year marked the debut of the Enduro R models, which had a taller suspension and seat height. Everything from the piston up had to be changed… last week… I opened up the valve cover and removed the rocker arms and cam.

First gear feels too high for dirt work, while it seems to be revving higher than needed on the highway. I found persistent false neutrals between fourth, fifth and six gears. Don't get me wrong, the R is a great engine once it's in full song, with probably far too much power for the average rider as it simply wheel spins in almost any gear.
