The weekend prior to was one that honored wounded veterans. For the third year in a row, the Safari Club International rounded up a group of wounded veterans and took them deer hunting in North Mississippi. Attendees included hunters from across the state representing nine hunting clubs that opened their hearts and hunting clubs to the veterans from the Korean, Vietnam and Middle East Wars. The clubs included:. Over the course of three days, the veterans enjoyed good food, great music by the Blackwater Trio, outstanding hunting and hospitality at the hunting camps and prizes and awards. Many local merchants, individuals and volunteers made this event possible through the donation of their facilities and materials, as well as their time. These gifts were expressions of their gratitude to the veterans and active military personnel for their service. Despite inclement weather conditions, the dedicated hunters never surrendered and were provided a bountiful harvest that included 11 bucks, six does, four wild hogs and six ducks. The largest buck was a beautiful nine-point taken at Burkes Hunting Club.

Watching the sun break the horizon from a hardwood forest in the Mississippi Delta is a special experience. In a quiet moment, while leaning against a towering Nuttall oak, one can almost feel the rich diversity of wildlife, plants, and trees of this unique region. A moment more, and you can visualize the hunting and fishing stories from the past. The Mississippi River Alluvial Plain is a nearly 24 million-acre region with bottomland hardwood forest as the dominant natural plant community. Backwater and headwater flooding over time sculpted a landscape of ridges, swales, and oxbow lakes. Differences in elevation of only a few inches to a few feet can result in noticeable differences in hydrology and plant communities. This diversity of forests and wetland habitats provides suitable conditions for a wide array of wildlife species. The productive soil of the Mississippi River floodplain is also highly suitable for agricultural production. As such, the last century has witnessed extensive clearing of bottomland forests to make way for large-scale farming.
