The Mon Cal, as they are often called, are shore-dwellers, land creatures who prefer to live near the water. Early Mon Cal civilizations fed on the creatures they found in the shallows, and developed an advanced aquaculture system. When they discovered the Quarren - the other intelligent race on Calamari, who live in the ocean deeps - the two races combined to create a symbiotic society in which both races flourished. They shared their home planet with the Quarren. The Mon Calamari were a bipedal, amphibious species with high-domed heads, webbed hands and large, goggle-like eyes, [1] which stuck out from the sides of their head. The individuals that hailed from the colder polar extremes of their planet were noticeably less colorful than those who came from the tropical zones. Male and female [20] Mon Calamari had barbels on their chin. Only having one barbel was an indication of youth, and Mon Calamari gained more as they aged. For example, Raddus 's grandchildren numbered in the dozens. However, because not all spawns were expected to come of age, the Mon Calamari felt loss less keenly than humans, who reproduced comparatively rarely and fewer.
As soldiers, mon calamari, the Mon Calamari were known to fight with a resolve that rivaled the Wookiees. This meant that they often thought of the needs of the society and believed in performing the greater good to the point that they placed it above the good of the individual. Furthermore, the planet resisted any attempts at formally joining mon calamari Republic which led to Mon Calamari and its legendary shipyards being considered rumors by many.
The Star Wars franchise is one of the most instantly recognizable and popular in the modern day. Created by George Lucas in the s, Star Wars immediately took over pop culture and become immensely successful. One of the big reasons why this franchise took off is that audiences found it to be a believable depiction of outer space and a completely different galaxy from our own. A lot of that believability had to do with the use of practical effects in creating the alien creatures something that, while put to the side during the prequel trilogy, has now come back into fashion after the takeover by Disney. These practical effects helped audiences fall in love with certain characters and species, including the Mon Calamari. The Mon Calamari have a long history beyond Ackbar, however. The Mon Calamari live on Mon Cala, a luscious ocean planet filled with coral reefs and underwater forests.
A member of the amphibious Mon Calamari species, Ackbar was the foremost military commander of the Rebel Alliance , and he led the attack against the second Death Star in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi , the final entry in the original Star Wars trilogy. Although his time in the film was brief, Ackbar became a prominent character in other Star Wars media, including novels, comic books, video games, and television shows, and later made appearances in the sequel trilogy films Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi , and the television series The Clone Wars. With his distinctive salmon-colored skin, webbed hands, high-domed head, and large fish-like eyes, Ackbar was realized in Return of the Jedi through the use of either a half-body puppet or full-body costume, depending on the camera angle required. In all three films he was portrayed by puppeteer Timothy D. Rose , who originally played other characters, but requested to also play Ackbar after seeing his sculpt on a display stand. Ackbar was voiced by Erik Bauersfeld , who made up the voice on the spot after looking at a photograph of Ackbar. Ackbar was originally planned to be more conventionally humanoid, but after Star Wars creator George Lucas decided to make him an alien, he allowed Return of the Jedi director Richard Marquand to pick from various designs. Marquand picked a sketch by concept artist Nilo Rodis-Jamero, over the objections of other members of the film crew who thought the character looked too silly or ugly. Ackbar made his first appearance not in the film, but in a Star Wars newspaper comic strip that ran a few months before Return of the Jedi was released.

Although the most common MC80 subclass was the MC80 Liberty type Star Cruiser , [1] the Home One type was perhaps the most famous Rebel capital ship design, as it was the class of the Home One and the Independence , which served as Admiral Ackbar's flagships in many famous battles. No two Mon Calamari ships were identical, each being individually designed and constructed, [17] but they were gradually standardized by the extensive refitting and adjustments made to the hulls when the vessels were converted for combat duty. Even the Home One and its sisters formed a uniform design type: cylindrical hulls, with a tapered bow, hangar bays amidships, and bulbous stern mounting ten huge sublight thrusters: four M8. Home One was originally designed for deep-space exploration, and it was constructed with massive panoramic viewports, which had to be removed when it was rebuilt as a warship. The Home One was described as the largest Star Cruiser in the Rebel Alliance fleet as it gathered for the Battle of Endor , [7] potentially indicating a variation in size and tonnage between the sister ships.

The Legends continuity takes the Mon Calamari-Quarren rivalry into even deeper territory, however. This article is about the Mon Calamari species. Dac came under assault again by the forces of Admiral Daala in the attack on Mon Calamari , but her forces were also repelled. By the time of the defeat of the Galactic Alliance in ABY and the rise of the Galactic Empire under Sith rule, the shipyards over Mon Calamari consisted of a massive and heavily armed construction station that ringed the entire planet. However, the Mon Cal were one of the few races that put up a fight in the face of certain doom. Mon Cala fell during the collapse of the Republic and the rise of the Empire. While the ships protecting the evacuating ships were under fierce attack by Sith forces, the evacuating ships were widely successful. While their starships were significantly different from those of other races, they were in fact more efficient in design. The Mon Calamari were renowned for their leadership and tactical brilliance both in space and ground combat. While attempting to rally prisoners at a Mon Calamari prison camp, he was captured by Separatist forces but secured an audience with Riff Tamson. As pilots, the Mon Calamari would control their ships like an artist would control a paintbrush. During the Yuuzhan Vong invasion , Dac was used as the temporary capital of the newly formed Galactic Federation of Free Alliances after the loss of Coruscant. The species claimed that their race came of age in the ancient archipelago Mkbuto Islands which was considered sacred as a result. At the end of the Clone Wars, with the Jedi exterminated and Palpatine's rise to power as Emperor of the newly formed Galactic Empire , he subjugated and enslaved the Mon Calamari and occupied Mon Cala.

Many xenobiologists believe the Mon Calamari are descended from squid, but evolved a more humanoid appearance than the Quarren. Their actions led to victories on Emmer and Makem Te whilst they continued to combat the warlord territories of Zsinj as well as Teradoc. Admiral Ackbar, for example, served in all of those organizations in some capacity, and eventually died in battle during the events of Episode VIII. In response, the Mon Calamari threw their weight behind the Alliance to Restore the Republic and played an important role in supplying warships to the Alliance Fleet. They tended to smell of salt and sea giving them a particular identifiable odor. Time 08 : 07 : Nearly overnight, thousands of Mon Calamari began to fill the ranks of the Alliance. While the ships protecting the evacuating ships were under fierce attack by Sith forces, the evacuating ships were widely successful.
