One or more shx files are missing

My bosses pc's shows up the attached missing SHX files error message when he opens a drawing with missing font files. I have a new install of Autocad and I've never ticked the box 'Always perform my current choice' and I don't get that error message. See attached screen dump. Why does he get that message and I don't?

I received some drawings from a client that is missing some shape files, it looks for file names like Z. Iv also had this in the past with fonts and it will change the font to another one but nags you for it each time I open the file so i would like to know how to stop that as well if its different to above. If you receive this dialog, it means you are missing a shape file that is referenced in the drawing. Shape files contain shapes that can be used by themselves, sort of like blocks. Most likely though, they are part of a complex linetype definition. If you do not have it, then perhaps you received this drawing from someone else? What if this is an internal drawing that you have been working on for a while? In any case, AutoCAD cannot find the shape file. If you want to remove the SHX file references forever, you will need to purge them from the drawing. Purge all linetypes and then see if the shape file can be purged. If not, keep digging. Set all layers to use the Continuous linetype, and make sure all entities are set to Bylayer linetype. Purge again. This should free up the shape file for purging if it was referenced in a linetype. If you do not have access to the required SHX file, it probably will not do much good to ask someone for it.

What do you want to do? Specify a replacement for each SHX file. Or Ignore the missing SHX file and continue. How do I figure out what SHX file is missing? Who did you get this drawing file from in the first place and why didn't they include the SHX files to go with it? If you click on "Specify a replacement" If you know where the shape file is located, maybe you just need to add the path to your support file search path.

Join the conversation You can post now and register later. We don't work with many outside drawings, so my solution was to fix the drawings as we came across them. Display as a link instead. Thanks CyberAngel for your reply, I have not been able to locate the missing fonts I did try, I did think to do as you said and just rename some other fonts, the only problem with that is I would have to then send those fonts everytime I send the drawing anywhere?
