An enormous amount of work went into imagining new worlds the film could present, including Hoth. Hoth being an ice planet always seems to have been the plan, but in this painting by the legendary Ralph McQuarrie, there might have been some variance. Tauntauns graze in a green pasture inside an ice cave, perhaps a product of a thermal heat vent. This concept painting, also by McQuarrie, shows a squad of Imperial Snowtroopers sneaking up on the shield generator of the Rebel base on Hoth. The gist of the Snowtrooper design is there with the insulated armor and hood like breath-mask.
