Players take the role of a character who inherits their deceased grandfather's dilapidated farm in a place known as Stardew Valley. Stardew Valley is open-ended , allowing players to grow crops, raise livestock, fish, cook, mine, forage, and socialize with the townspeople, including the ability to marry and have children. It allows up to four players to play online together. Barone developed Stardew Valley by himself over four and a half years. He was heavily inspired by the Story of Seasons series, with additions to address some of the shortcomings of those games. He used it as an exercise to improve his own programming and game design skills. British studio Chucklefish approached Barone midway through development with the offer to publish the game, allowing him to focus more on completing it. Stardew Valley has been cited as one of the greatest video games of all time. Yasuhiro Wada , the creator of Story of Seasons , also praised the game for retaining the freedom that later entries of his series had lost. The game sold more than 30 million copies by , making it one of the best-selling video games of all time. Stardew Valley is a farming simulation game primarily inspired by Story of Seasons , a series by Marvelous and previously known as Harvest Moon. Players may select from several different farm types, each with a unique theme and different benefits and drawbacks.

The game begins with the player tending to their grandfather, who is currently on his deathbed. He hands them a sealed envelope. He tells the player when the player is crushed by the burden of modern life then the player should open the envelope. Sometime later, after the grandfather's passing, the player is seen working at their cubicle inside JojaCorp, a mega enterprise, and is seemingly frustrated with the dull lifestyle they live. Remembering the words of their grandfather, the player reaches into their desk to open the envelope. Inside, there's a message from the grandfather as well as a bus pass to Stardew Valley. The player arrives at the valley and heads towards the farm their grandfather owned. After seeing the farm overgrown with trees, stones, and logs, the player sets out to start their new life, in memory of their grandfather. The player controls their character, who is customized during character creation, as they help reinvigorate their grandfather's farm, and bring to life to the currently abandoned community center.
