The Research area of your base is where you'll be going to uncover new technology. To even begin a research, you must unlock it first. There are several types, but generally you will unlock new research as you encounter new technology during missions. Fight a new enemy? See a new weapon? Finish that mission and go back to the Science Lab and you can probably research some new technology. Once you unlock it, you can begin it at any time. Only one research project can be active at a time, and it takes a certain amount of time to finish.
