Originally airing in Japan on February 24,between episodes andthe special is based on an extra chapter of the manga series. In trunks and gohan alternate timelineGoku succumbs to a viral heart disease. Goku's death, being the result of natural causes, means that he can no longer be revived with the Dragon Balls. With the death of Piccolo, Earth's guardian, Kamitrunks and gohan, dies as well and the Dragon Balls are permanently rendered unusable, making it impossible for anyone to be revived.

Trunks was introduced as a time-traveling Saiyan warrior who came back in time to help the Z-Fighters of the past fight against the villainous Androids. Meanwhile, Trunks and Goten are high school-aged teenagers who have decided to use the amazing abilities they were born with given their Saiyan heritage to be superheroes. Together, the two were costumed crime fighters, complete with quippy catchphrases, striking poses, and a heroic attitude—and if Future Trunks saw this, he would be incredibly embarrassed. In season 1, episode 52 of the Dragon Ball Super anime, Future Trunks is back in the alternate past of the main Dragon Ball timeline after an all-new threat attacked his future, and he needed the help of the Z-Fighters to stop the villain known as Goku Black aka Zamasu. However, the prime-timeline Gohan shown in this episode essentially gave up his life as a warrior and became a family man—but not before he created the superhero alter ego: the Great Saiyaman. Then, to top it all off, Gohan turned his fighting skills and raw power into a joke by adopting the superhero persona of the Great Saiyaman. The episode showed Future Trunks acting noticeably confused when Gohan did poses and spoke like a hearty hero, but the underlying emotion he was feeling was disappointment in what his one-time mentor became.

He never changed his hairstyle since his childhood, but the longer part of his hair is cut much shorter, somewhat resembling the haircut his alternate past counterpart had when he first trained in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber , and when fighting with Cell , only it was more grown into because Future Gohan was a full-grown adult. He also obtains a scar that runs down the left side of his face, the after effect of an injury sustained during a battle with the androids that also cost him his left arm. Like his mainstream self's personality as a child, in his childhood, Future Gohan lacked the fighting spirit of his father and, as a fighter, he is mostly a coward and is a shy little boy, was gentle of heart, a pacifist in nature, but when enraged for seeing his friends hurt, his hidden dormant potential briefly revealed itself, he was also intensely focused in his studies, until the time his father died of the heart virus and the invasion of the androids and the murder of his friends, especially his mentor Future Piccolo , which is the period of the time divergence, and the period that dramatically changed him for the rest of his life. Future Gohan seemed to have lost his pacifist-like demeanor which he had as a child, and is shown to be in quite a bit of pain and stress after all the years of challenging the Androids alone, and has a sort of "do or die" attitude, fiercely driven to destroy the Androids for all the death and destruction they caused. However, as seen in his brief moments of peace, Future Gohan does retain his calm and cheerful nature, much like his father and present counterpart. During which, he enjoys life for what it is worth, most notably when telling Future Trunks to forget about becoming a Super Saiyan until he knows he is ready.

One of the many fusion characters to appear in Dragon Ball Heroes is one that fans have wanted to see for decades: the combination of Gohan and Trunks , also known as Gohank s. While some fusions are certainly more memorable than others, Dragon Ball Heroes has many fused characters who are exclusive to the manga and game. A massive source of ki appears right behind them, and it turns out to be none other than the infamous Lord Slug, a Super Namekian who has now grown to the size of a skyscraper. In order to stand a chance against the newly empowered Lord Slug, as well as the Demon Gods who have appeared on the scene, Gohan and Trunks determine that their only way to win is through utilizing the Fusion Dance. Having both mastered the technique, Gohan and Trunks quickly align their ki and perform the short ritual dance, transforming into the powerful new warrior Gohanks. Gohanks is able to hold off Lord Slug with a flurry of energy attacks, but their battle is cut short by the appearance of a Dark Dragon Ball-possessed Kid Buu.

Dragon Ball Super episode 52 is another somewhat filler episode as we get to see more about the relationship between Future Trunks and the present version of Gohan. Many fans will know how this is going to play out. Before this episode aired, there was a meme going around about how Future Trunks will feel when he sees the current nerdy version of Gohan. Well this episode of Dragon Ball Super kind of makes this meme turn into a reality. We also see the return of the Great Saiyaman too…. If you remember correctly, Future Trunks had a bad-ass Adult Gohan as his mentor. Sadly though, this version of Gohan lost his arm, and then later died at the hands of the androids. We obviously know the current Gohan is nothing like that version. The episode actually starts out with Bulma fixing the time machine along with her dad and the Pilaf gang. No matter how many times he tries to impress Mai, she keeps ignoring him.
