While enslaved his master taught him to read and write, skills that eventually served him well. After a very inauspicious beginning, he entered into politics and in became the first African-American sheriff in Fort Bend County. To commemorate his accomplishment, our school mascot is known as the Burton Sheriff. In , he became a Texas State Senator. In the Senate he championed the education of African Americans.
