AYER - It's an excellent sign that you've picked the right place for Korean food when you hear Korean spoken at several tables as you are seated. Here, it's not a surprise. Woo Jung is the place and has been for years. Small and nondescript, it's nonetheless the region's favorite for Korean comfort food. Whether it's kimbap or bibimbap you're craving, have no fear, it's here. The first is a sushi roll, the latter a rice dish. This restaurant is a longtime family operation, now run by the second generation, and most people have noticed it as they head into Ayer on Main Street before the commuter rail bridge and downtown area. Woo Jung is a simple white building, clearly marked Woo Jung, in Korean. There will be lots of cars parked outside. Head in. The first thing that comes to the table is hot tea and an array of small plates containing that healthy powerhouse of fermented cabbage, kim chi, as well as pickled bean sprouts, crispy daikon and more. Koreans mastered pickling and fermentation centuries ago, long before it became hip here. There's no alcohol license, so bring your own beverages, if desired; the restaurant provides a corkscrew and glasses. This went well with the fermented appetizers and was more than enough for four. We found them deliciously prepared.

I had the 8 gan poong gi sweet and spicy. The chicken is the only option of this meal that can be made gluten free. This little restaurant is a gem! I did have some concerns as 3 different staff talked to me about gluten free offerings and had different information. The gentleman who greeted us and sat us said mostly anything could be made GF except for a few items premarinated with soy. Makes sense.

This spot is such a gem. Been going here for over 5 years, the food is always incredible, and the service is wonderful. They are so friendly and helpful and just the FOOD! Oh man. The sweet and spicy fried chicken is to die for, decadent and perfectly crispy every time.
