Taking place between and[5] the six-part series follows the lives of the Lyons family, who witness increasingly tumultuous global affairs and the rise to power of Vivienne Rook, an outspoken British celebrity businesswoman turned populist politician whose controversial opinions divide the nation. The focus of the six-part series is the Manchester-based Lyons family: Daniel is getting married to Ralph, Stephen and Celeste worry about their kids, Rosie is chasing a new guy, and Edith has not been home for years. All their lives converge on one crucial night in , and the story accelerates into the future, following the lives and loves of the Lyons over the next 15 years. In June , the BBC announced that Russell T Davies would write Years and Years which was described as "an epic drama following a family over 15 years of unstable political, economical and technological advances". As ever, Davies seems to capture the zeitgeist effortlessly — fear and uncertainty hover over all the characters and you can sense their inner gimbals ceaselessly recalibrating, like ours, in search of a stability that never comes. But the day-to-day minutiae of life go on as they must — and he aerates the heaviest, most fraught issues from the insidious nature of tech, to income inequality, to the rapidity with which events can become both ancient history and rapidly repeated with wit and optimism, so that they are no longer a burden, to us or the narrative, but grist to the mental and dramatic mill. She wants her consciousness to be uploaded into the cloud, to discard her body and live for ever, digitally. Having sex with anything called Keith becomes no less funny in the future than it is now. They consummate their relationship on the night that sirens blare out all over Britain, as the US fires a nuclear missile at a disputed Chinese territory and the British prime minister announces that the country is on a war footing. Its subject matter made the series a difficult sell to broadcasters. BBC One and ITV passed on the series, and Channel 4 took it on only after their commissioning editor of drama, Lee Mason, fought for it and the series was shortened from a planned eight episodes to five.
