Zuko and mai
For fans of Avatar: The Last Airbenderthe relationships between the characters are central to the series.
This will be my very first post on Tumblr. Just judging by the way she was introduced to the story and her first in-show interaction with Zuko, I am going to argue that the decision to make her the endgame lover of Zuko was something that was decided very late. When we first encounter Mai, she is depicted as amoral, and pretty unemotional. They do NOT know at this point that Zuko will be pardoned and allowed to come back. If this was intended to be a couple we are supposed to root for, the story has a very strange way of showing that. It happens while he is working at a tea shop in the lower ring of Ba Sing Se. She is attracted to him and asks him out on a date.
Zuko and mai
The daughter of a powerful government official, Mai has known and loved Zuko all her life. Both received similar upbringings, where callousness and cruelty were often rewarded. At the start of Book 3, Mai and Zuko are already dating. Apropos of what seemed to be a one-sided crush, fans were either delighted or confused. Those not privy to additional content were missing an important piece of the puzzle. Noting his anguish over betraying Uncle Iroh, the sadistic Azula uses an unknowing Mai to tip the scales in her favor. Believing that a rekindled childhood flame will anchor her brother to the Homeland, Azula prepares a date for the two of them. The date is loaded with romantic cliches — likely curtesy of Ty Lee — features an annoying musician and ultimately goes pretty poorly. Attempting to keep up the ruse and avoid further embarrassment, Zuko tells Jin that Mai is an old friend, and a very skilled knife thrower. This mirrors a childhood incident that brought them closer together, though no one ends up soaked this time — until Mai insists that Jin give it a try. After Zuko is pulled from the fountain, the two discuss old times, as well as their old and new feelings for each other and share a kiss. Neglecting to inform Mai about this is what ultimately drives them apart again. In subsequent graphic novels, it becomes clear that Mai and Zuko still harbor deep feelings for each other, despite the former dating someone new for a time.
Mai and her comrades easily defeated the attackers, causing her to wonder that this rebel assault was far too small.
Zuko and Mai knew each other since they were children. Mai developed a crush on Zuko and Azula and Ty Lee noticed this. Azula decided that it would be funny to create an awkward moment between them and convinced her mother to let Zuko play with them. Azula placed an apple on top of Mai's head and lit it on fire. Zuko immediately tackled her into the fountain in order to save her. Azula and Ty Lee laughed at them and remarked that they looked cute together. Mai was embarrassed while Zuko was simply annoyed that he got wet.
Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender love the series for the well-written characters, the exciting worldbuilding, and the compelling element bending system. But, what really drew fans in was the relationship between characters. While Katara and Aang might be the main couple to evolve from the show, Mai and Zuko are one that was actually together in the plot of the series itself. Fans were able to see this relationship develop and view some of the ups and downs of their dynamic. While some people ship Zuko and Mai with other people, they are the canon couple, and there are many reasons why they were great together.

And that's exactly how I need it to be, because I won't ever let myself get hurt like that again. It was decided to set up a decoy caravan that would travel the regular way from the harbor to Hari Bulkan, whereas the Fire Lord took a secret route through the woods. Angered that she was being kept out of the loop of everything, Mai broke up with Zuko, saying "You love your secrets more [than you love me]". He said he had a nice time and he shared a genuine connection. She also berated him for leaving only a letter as a good-bye, rather than having the courage to break with her to her face.
